Visual Art Galleries

By mapping the public and private galleries and designer studios, we can see how this typology cluster together in the Los Angeles Downtown and surrounding downtowns, notably in Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills.  Art and design galleries and studios often locate in ex-industrial areas, or along currently chic mixed-use streets.  Current trends show that East Los Angeles neighborhoods are becoming popular amongst artists and designers.

Community Gardens / Urban Farms

Urban farming in Los Angeles has been on the rise in recent decades.  Gardens are more sporadically placed within primarily residential zones.  Empty home lots are being converted by various non-profit and community based organizations into community gardens.  The abundance of front and backyards in Los Angeles also allows for single-family homes the space to grow vegetables and spices.

All mass public transit rail lines are shown in yellow, and a future line is shown in cyan.  The Los Angeles Metro system has been expanding at incredible rates since 1990, as seen by this timeline.

Combined Maps

Overlaying the maps shows that there is overlap in the performing and visual arts locations, as well as a few more community gardens in the “hip” neighborhoods, which have also been the center of the entertainment and music industries within the city.  However, current trends show efforts being made to provide more artistic opportunities in the lower socio-economic neighborhoods south of Downtown Los Angeles as well as an increasing presence of artists locating their studios and living within the areas of South and East LA.
